Jackson, Miss. – Mississippi Urology is making history as the first site in the world to perform a landmark prostate cancer surgery that could dramatically improve quality of life for patients. Urologic surgeons Dr. Patrick Daily and Dr. Jason Blalock and are leading the charge in this pivotal clinical trial, conducted at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in partnership with Levy Medical.

The study is evaluating a new absorbable mesh device designed to reduce urinary incontinence following prostate cancer surgery. Radical prostatectomy, a common treatment for prostate cancer, often results in urinary leakage, with as many as 30% of men experiencing incontinence a year after surgery.

The innovative device is placed during surgery to support the urethra and create additional resistance, significantly reducing the likelihood of leakage. “Preliminary results are very promising,” said Dr. Blalock during a recent WLBT News interview. “We are the first site to perform the surgery, and now other major centers like Johns Hopkins, Vanderbilt, and Mayo Clinic are coming online. It’s exciting to see Mississippi leading the way in such an important trial.”

Dr. Daily, who is also spearheading the study at Mississippi Baptist, emphasized the importance of this work for men facing prostate cancer surgery. “For many patients, the risk of urinary incontinence is one of the most feared outcomes,” he explained. “Being able to offer participation in a study that could change that reality is incredibly meaningful—for our patients here in Mississippi and ultimately for men everywhere.”

The trial aims to enroll 266 patients, with Mississippi Urology already enrolling more than a dozen men into the study. Participants are randomly assigned to receive either the new device or standard surgery, with outcomes compared at the study’s conclusion.

Mississippi Urology is proud to be at the forefront of advancing prostate cancer treatment, bringing world-class innovation to patients in Mississippi and beyond.
